WHAT IS FAMILY? WHERE IS HOME?

What is Family?
By Suzanne Lewis

angelsearthIn 1991 I was directed to pursue spiritual healing as a result of a tragic death of a peer. My own health became challenged by phenomenal interactions with spirit. In just a few months time, I’d literally lose two more friends and several blood family members whose health was challenged. My normal existence was rocked by the absurd.
My studies with Sandy Ingerman who wrote SOUL RETRIEVAL became my life bouy and provided a structure and system to address the great mystery of life…death. This highly spiritual pursuit demanded that I learn to “Sing for my life.” As Sandy would explain, ‘All of life is vibratory.’ At the cellular level we are all one, we are the same. When one sings from the heart, the true frequencies are met with deep harmony and support.
It took over a year for me to discover my song. Early on in my life I had been discouraged to speak let along sing. But the medicine required for me to feel safe and supported on this earth was my song. With great resistance I hummed with the trees, the wind and water. I wrote short prose of meaningful words. I prayed and petitioned in the sacred ‘inipi’, sweat lodge and in time the following came to me:
Open Spirit
Open Wide
Mother Earth and
Father Sky
Sister Moon and
Brother Sun
Oh, Ancestors . . .
I will be of the One who will break the chains,
I will be of the one who will heal the pain.
Back to the Circle of Light
Back to the Circle of Life.
Open Spirit, Open Wide!

The second requirement of spiritual healers is to commit to spend an hour a day in nature. Now, my practice would find me by the river, sitting on rocks, trekking on various pathways, singing my song.
These mandates have become my great strengths. I honor these spiritual commitments. What has been strengthened is my keen connection with the family of life. It goes way beyond the DNA of blood family or the choosing of extended family. Family is found in the sparkle of sunbeams on the dew of flower petals, the rapport and respect of the unexpected brown bear in the wild berry bush or the touch of the wind on my cheek.
I have learned to value the repeated exchange of the hummingbird that zips closer and closer to my ear. It is clear to me that I am in relations with this mysterious, high energy winged one. So I will still my chattering brain and listen deeply, being open to gain wisdom beyond words.
Surrendering my egoic need to know and rationalized truth, I begin to harmonize with the hummingbird’s song, and thus goes with this great epic called life.
Sometimes when I am in company of beings whose verbal song is mean, negative, demoralizing and judgmental, it is as if my protective alarm system starts pulsing out messages, alert! Alert! We’re in unsafe territory and like the hummingbird, I’ll have to move rapidly away from this dangerous input.
What is family? For me, family are those components of the Family of Life and Light that:
Honor and respect themselves and all others
Trust that this Earth is a friendly place, a quality neighborhood
Take responsibility to do no harm
Have an intimate relationship with the Great Spirit, GOD.
We are all one family. Suzanne Lewis

For all you Circle Holders
A little something to expand the realm of possibilities.

…left behind the truly important things in life. The Indians would see that their people in old days were in tune something far more wonderful, the Spirit of Life. This is not all that the old ones saw in their dreams. They saw that just when the Indians seemed to be all becoming like the more foolish white men, just when everybody thought they had forgotten about the ancient days, at that time a great light would come from the east. It would come into the hearts of some of the Indians, and they would become like the prairie fire, spreading not only love between all races, but also between the different religions.

This light you, each of us must find. I believe that when you seek for your vision on the mountain top you will be told how to find it. For it will be something so big and wonderful that
in it all peoples of the world can find shelter. And, in that day all the little circles will come under the one big circle of understanding and unity.
“The rainbow is a sign from Him who is in all things.” Said the old, wise one.
It is a sign of the union of all people like a big family. Go to the mountaintop, child of my flesh, and learn to be a Warrior of Rainbow,
for it is only by spreading love and joy to others that hate in this world can be changed to understanding and kindness, and war and destruction shall end.”
